2024 Off-Cycle Election Update

The Workshop on TEI’s Election Violence Mitigation and Advocacy Tool (EVMAT) for Edo State Governorship Election commenced today 22nd July, 2024.

The DG,TEI, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris in his opening remarks informed participants that the workshop is geared towards equipping them with requisite set of skills to effectively engage them in the deployment of the EVMAT tool for the forthcoming Edo State Governorship Election. He reminded the participants that they have been carefully selected for the training before deployment to various local government areas of the State, in order to administer the EVMAT instrument. He drew their attention to note that successful risk mapping can only be achieved using accurate data. The Director General further admonished them to take the workshop very seriously, as the Commission is committed to conducting the Edo State Governorship election in a peaceful atmosphere, come 21st September, 2024.

The Chair BEI, Prof Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, in his opening message explained to participants that violence in elections had been a worrisome issue to INEC, indicating the genesis for the establishment the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) chaired by the Honourable Chairman INEC and Co-chaired by the NSA. Violence in elections has been very worrisome to INEC due to its potentials of disrupting the electoral process
as life is sacrosanct and nobody deserves to die, suffer any injuries, or loose important valuables as a result of elections.
To further strengthen its efforts at curbing election violence, the Commission through The Electoral Institute (TEI), proactively designed for deployment, the Election Violence Mitigation and Advocacy Tool (EVMAT). The is intended to track possible triggers of violence, in order to mitigate or neutralise the possibilities of occurrence of violence.

Dr Wille Eselebor, the Resource Person urged the field agents to collect the most relevant data that will help INEC in ensuring that the 2024 Edo Governorship election is the most peaceful ever. He elaborated on ethics of research, integrity of researchers, and emphasized building trust and confidence.

Participants were taken through the basic skills of practical application of the field instrument to be deployed for Data collection . The workshop ended with the question and answer session after which a thanks was given by the Director, R & D.

Updated Final List of Candidates for the November 2024 Ondo State Governorship Election pursuant to Court Order.

The Training Department of the Electoral Institute (TEI) conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) on Monday 28th October, 2024 at TEI Auditorium in preparation for the training of Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) and Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers (POs/APOs) ahead of ONDO State Governorship Election scheduled for 16th November, 2024.

The Chairman Board of Electoral Institute and National Commissioner, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, in his opening remarks, highlighted the significance of the ToT as the first and essential step in the conduct of the approved cascade training plan in Ondo State.

He stated further that participants are to train the SPOs and coodinate the training of POs/APOs. He tasked trainers to ensure the mastery of the processes and procedures on election day activities. He thereafter thanked the participants made up of TEI and Headquarters Trainers for attending the program.

The Director General of the Electoral Institute Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, in his welcome remarks,

urged participants to imbibe the new initiatives especially the accreditation of voters using the BVAS, the scanning of the Polling Unit result and uploading it to the improved IReV portal all introduced by the Commission to guarantee free, fair, credible and inclusive elections. He opined that training is the foundation for bgood preparation in any electoral process and a guarantee to achieving successful election. The DG hinted that the performance of the Poll Officials at the recently conducted Edo State Governorship election was adjudged by various stakeholders to be outstanding and satisfactory and reiterated the need to raise the bar in Ondo Governorship Election. He further urged participants to ensure quality and effective step down of the ktraining so as to ensure optimum performance of the election personnel.

In attendance at the ToT are Director, Training, Director Research and Documentation, Director G &I and Acting Administrative Secretary of the Institute Mr. Tony Ezomo. Also present are Mr. Tunde Ajayi, who represented the Director ICT Dept. and Mr. Bolaji Oje from Electoral Operations.

Presentations were made on the INEC E-SCHOOL, INEC TRAINING BOT, BASIC ELECTION TECHNOLOGY EOSC, INCLUSIVITY, INEC – SANS and the INEC Training Reporting and Coordination Tools.
Hands-on-Practical on BVAS was also conducted by the ICT department.
